US citizens have been renouncing their citizenship at an unprecedented rate. In the second quarter of 2013 alone, a staggering 1,130 US citizens decided to give up their passport at their local US Embassy. This number is significantly higher than the previous year's second quarter figure, where less than 700 individuals renounced their citizenship. Even if we go back a few years to 2008, only a few hundred Americans relinquished their citizenship for the entire year. It is clear that there has been a sharp increase in the number of people renouncing their citizenship within just a couple of years. The US government has failed to address this issue effectively. Instead of recognizing it as a problem, they place blame on expats and taxpayers. Americans living overseas are burdened with excessive paperwork and obligations. Even if they have a simple bank account for everyday transactions such as grocery bills, they are required to declare it to the IRS. The government, fueled by its own policies, views these individuals as traitors. These Americans are left with no choice but to renounce their citizenship. They are law-abiding citizens who have played by the rules, but the rules themselves are burdensome and not widely understood. While signs reminding citizens to obey traffic laws can be found every half a mile, the IRS fails to adequately inform expats about tax requirements. It is unsurprising that these citizenship renunciations are on the rise. Americans are waking up to the fact that there are better opportunities and lives outside of the United States. They are realizing that holding US citizenship is not the only path to success and happiness.
