On March 8th, 2013, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services introduced an enhanced Form I-9 for employment eligibility verification. The form has been reformatted to reduce errors and now includes clearer instructions for both employees and employers. The updated form also includes optional fields for the employee's phone number and email address, as well as data fields for foreign passport number and country of issuance. In addition, the form is now a fillable PDF document that can be completed online starting on May 7th, 2013. The revised Form I-9, version 3-8-13, includes three sections and spans more than one page. This video provides a brief overview of Section 1 of the form and offers helpful reminders on how to properly complete it. Section 1 is completed by the employee and requires them to provide identifying information such as their name and address. They must also attest to their citizenship status or authorization to work in the United States. If the employee identifies as an alien authorized to work, they should also include the expiration date of their employment authorization if applicable. If the employee receives assistance in completing Section 1, such as from a preparer or translator, the preparer/translator certification section must be completed. The optional data fields for email address and phone number can be left blank if the employee chooses not to provide that information. However, if the employee checks the "alien authorized to work" , they must complete the data fields for foreign passport number and country of issuance if they have an I-94 admission number from US Customs and Border Protection. It's important to note that if the employee provided an I-94 admission number from US Citizenship and Immigration Services, the foreign passport and country of issuance fields do not need to be completed.
