As a US citizen living abroad, you need to bear in mind three key filing dates throughout the year. April 15th is tax day and it applies to Americans overseas as well. Any taxes you owe to the IRS must be paid by this date. June 15th is an important date for Americans living abroad as it provides an automatic extension to file US tax returns. This extension applies if you have more than two hundred thousand US dollars of foreign financial assets per person, excluding your home if it's owned in your own name. Additionally, you must include form 8938 with your return, as required under the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) starting from 2017 onwards. Form 116, also known as the Foreign Bank Account Report or F bar, is also due on June 15th. Lastly, October 15th is the final filing deadline if you have applied for extensions for both your tax return and F bar. After this date, penalties will start to incur. Thank you for watching.
