Hi folks, welcome back to Mind Your Own Business. My name is Steve and in this video, I'm going to talk about a W-9 form. A W-9 form is an IRS form used in the United States that independent contractors supply to their customers. W-9 forms can be easily found on the web. You can open up a search engine and type in IRS W-9, and there may be more than one version out there. You'll want the latest one, which at the time of making this video is the revision from August 2013, as I'm currently in March 2014. The form is relatively easy to fill out, but it does come with about three pages of very detailed instructions. At this point, you have two options. You can either choose to print this form out and fill it out by hand or save the form to your computer and fill it out electronically before printing. For illustration purposes, I have saved the form to my computer and will fill it out digitally. Notice the difference between the form on my computer and the one I was looking at in my web browser. The fields on the computer form are blue and can be typed into. I will start by entering my name, which needs to be my legal name, the same way it appears on my income tax return. The second line is for a business or entity name, which is optional. If you have registered for a legal business name, you can enter it here. The next section asks you to check the appropriate federal tax classification, which refers to your business type, such as sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation, or S corporation.
